Israel seeks to deploy as many as 20,000 soldiers to protect its energy sources in Greek Cyprus run by Israelis according to Anatolia news agency.

Nicosia / NationalTurk – A senior Cypriot source is cited as stating that Israel plans to locate 20,000 soldiers in the Greek part of the Cyprus island to protect its energy projects in the area. The report from Anatolia News Agency adds that at least 30,000 Israeli workers and their families will move to Limassol to work on planned joint Israeli-Cypriot projects.

Israel and Greek Cyprus cooperate to benefit from natural resources in the allegedly rich eastern Mediterranean region and Cyprus in a joint operation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Greek Cyprus Prime Minister, Demetris Christofias, met on February 16 to discuss the two countries’ joint interest in the region. Details of the political talks between the two leaders were kept from media interest and highly confidential.

In other details, Anatolia News agency cited a senior Greek Cypriot government official informing that Christophias specifically asked Netanyahu to convince Israeli businessmen to suspend their investments in Turkish Cyprus.

Israeli PM Netanyahu reportedly offered his Greek Cypriot counterpart during the same meeting to undertake all expenses required to construct a gas plant build for extracting the natural gas found in the eastern part of Mediterranean Sea. In exchange, Netanyahu asked that all the 10,000 personnel that would work at the plant be brought in from Israel with their families, which would increase the number to nearly 30,000.  A project planned by both countries. In exchange, Netanyahuurged that all the employees and crew for the projects should be Israeli and come with their families.

The high number of Israel citizens in Greek Cyprus would present a security issue, which Netanyahu suggested be solved by sending as many as 20,000 Israeli military personnel to safeguard both the Israelis and the natural gas facilities digging for allegedly a significant earth source. Israel’s planned location for its personnel and soldiers is in Limassol
