Italy vs England : Penalty shootout shows some British players should avoid taking penalties

England’s kind of cinderella story had a familiar ending as another penalty shoot-out sent them back to the island heartbroken again from a major football tournament – this time without hard luck stories – only with questions if black players have a harder time to find the required composure at penalty shootouts.

Ashley Young and Ashley Cole missed the target in the Italy vs England penalty shootout as Montolivo shot his penalty kick wide off the bar. Buffon made the Ashley Cole save and Diamanti put the ball in a final time to book for Italy the EURO 2012 semifinal spot and a clash with the Germans.

England vs Italy soccer : England ‘s fate in major football tournaments remains unchanged

England ‘s rugged road in major soccer tournaments they have travelled before proved to be once again that some England players are not meant to kick penalties when it mattered the most and the final destination has always been misery. England ‘s bad fate started in Turin in 1990 at World cup 1990 before moving on to Wembley in 1996 at home turf in the Euro 1996 then at St. Etienne in 1998 in World Cup 1998 then in Lisbon in Euro 2004 and in Gelsenkirchen, Germany two years later in World Cup 2006. Italy vs England game in Euro 2012 in Kiew, Ukraine is the latest part of the drama for Britons.

England have not been able to progress beyond quarter finals during the last 16 years in Euro soccer tournament, and their heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Italy in the Euro 2012 Quarter Finals vs Italy means that they will have to wait another 4 years to try to reach quarter finals all over again and try their luck for semifinals.

Italy vs England in Kyiv saw a match in which the better side won in the end. Italy won on penalties (4-2), the 120 minutes prior to the shoot-outs, the Azzurri had the Three Lions on the mat for most part of the game. With 68 % ball possession and 833 passes competed as opposed to England’s 364, with 31 shots against England’s 8, eighteen of them on target to England’s only 4, the Italian domination was morte than clear. England just fell a bit short in comparison to Italy’s superior ball play and attack In the past England have understandably felt a sense of injustice, a belief that an exit on penalties was scant reward for their efforts. Here in Kiev, a gripping quarter-final got the winners it fully deserved. . But England had its chances too.

England vs Italy Euro 2012 Soccer: Hodgson’s England could go only this far

The result of Italy vs England game was that England, barring a 20-minute first half spell in which they played their best football of the tournament, were pulled to pieces and only survived until penalties via a combination of good fortune, brave defending and poor Italian finishing.

In Kiev England found that the iron tactical discipline, togetherness and resilience injected by Roy Hodgson in his brief time in charge could only take them so far. England were tortured by the superior technique shown by Italy and one man in particular – the glorious, peerless Andrea Pirlo. So as England’s players pulled into their Krakow hotel in the early hours of Monday morning after England vs Italy game, they can take satisfaction from their efforts in Poland and Ukraine but cannot have a single complaint about the manner of their departure.

Italy vs England Euro 2012 : Rooney short of match fitness, Gerrard and Parker simply exhausted

England’s exhausted midfield pair of captain Steven Gerrard and Scott Parker could not lay a glove on Pirlo,  the elegant Italian midfield operator in the Italy vs England clash and Wayne Rooney was not able to track back and exert his influence on Pirlo. Wayne Rooney’s addition to this fighting England squad was expected to raise the level of their footbal, yet it brought only a jinx to it. England have been more effectiv in the attack before Rooney ended his 2 games suspension.

Wayne Rooney looked short of match sharpness and physical fitness against Italy, rather like a car trying to start on a flat battery as he struggled to spark himself into life, although such are his natural gifts that no-one should blame Hodgson for picking him. He may have scored England’s winner against Ukraine but the combination of a two-match ban and the very obvious effects of a lengthy break from football means Euro 2012 was another unfulfilling experience. Wayne Rooney had been fighting in vain to make his mark on a major tournament.

Gerrard has been an outstanding leader while John Terry – irrespective of how his personality and selection divided opinion – fully justified his inclusion. Chelsea’s captain was magnificent in his defiance as Italy swarmed over England. and Andy Carrol proves with every minute he is at the pitch he is a valuable member of this fighting England squad.

Goalkeeper Joe Hart has cemented his reputation as one of the world’s best goalkeepers, while defender Joleon Lescott has looked an England player at last with that block in the second half of Italy vs England Euro 2012 quarter finals game.

Pirlo’s penalty in the shoot-out, chipped audaciously and gently over goalkeeper Joe Hart, sat so easily alongside the rest of his performance. Deft, intuitive and quite simply on a different plane to anything else.

It was a long, harrowing night for England vs Italy and in these extreme circumstances it was to their credit that they hung in and drew the Italy vs England match despite being outclassed. It is a quality that has bought back a measure of respect from the English nation and there should be no heavy criticism of players or manager.

Italy’s win vs England brought an abrupt end to the rising optimism after England topped his group at Euro 2012 ‘s. Now oldhand Roy Hodgson must sift through the Euro 2012 campaign and plot for the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup. While the flight back to England will carry a liberal helping of despair, there is still plenty for Roy Hodgson to be happy about after only being appointed in May.

It is clear England’s players have bought into Hodgson’s methods and there was a unity of purpose about this England squad that was conspicuous by its absence in South Africa in 2010. In that World Cup campaign an unhappy squad trudged from one abject display to another, suggesting there was a lot more they could offer had they actually been bothered.

This England may have had its limitations but there is no shame in their demise. They left nothing behind. What we saw at Italy vs England clash at Euro 2012 quarter finals was what Hodgson has got – an honest group short of sparkle when it mattered on Sunday.

This Italy vs England game was a brutal illustration of where England are. They can return to England proud of their efforts but also knowing they were eliminated by a better and superior side. They have to fight bravely again to go to World Cup 2014 in Brasil, they have got some quality and promising youngsters but in order to play possesion football you need more than that. The new generation players of England are fighters, will be fighters but no one should expect good ball movement and imaginative offensive tactics from England in the near future.

  1. June 26th.Again, The English players have difficulty with ball possession and attacking flair.I don’t see any improvement since 2010, when England was outclassed by a much better German team, with much superior skills. The Englis Football Association needs to realize that ENGLISH players need to be trained in SPEED, BALL CONTROL AND PASSING!We need to develop players that wont to take defenders on and demonstrate flair and creativity, otherwise England will continue to be minor contender in any future Tournament. The English Football Association needs to wake up to the reality that England has to improve the skills of the players, or the disapointing outcomes, will continue for years to come.Go England!

  2. I’m not the first to say it, but English players lack advanced football skills: their touch is generally terrible, precision passing is virtually non-existent, and they seem to lack the nerves to play at the international level. Running fast and hard is not enough.
