A Japanese magnetic levitation train has broken its own world speed record during a manned test on an experimental track. Train hit 603 km/h in test run near Japan’s highest mountain, breaking previous record of 590 km/h.

The train hit 603 kilometers per hour (374mph) in a test run near Japan’s highest mountain, Mount Fuji, owner Central Japan Railway Co said Tuesday.

Last Thursday, the train had set the previous record of 590 km/h. Kyodo news agency reported Tuesday that the company is preparing to start maglev (magnetic levitation) train services in 2027.

The services are expected to run between Shinagawa, the Tokyo terminal for the service, and Nagoya, capital of the Chubu central region.

The new train will connect the two cities – 286 kilometers apart – in 40 minutes.

On Turkish terms, the train would get you the 351 kilometers from Ankara to Istanbul in 49 minutes – perhaps even faster given that the greater distance would allow for more acceleration.

The train is expected to run a maximum 500 km/h during commercial operations (Anadolu Agency).
