Julian Assange Requests Review of Swedish Extradition Appeal

Founder of Wikileaks Julian Assange requested Tuesday the British Supreme Court a new review of the appeal for extradition to Sweden, where he faces charges for alleged sex crimes.

Arrested in London for over a year, Assange refuses to be handed over to Sweden since he persistently defends the fact that he is innocent and accuses the U.S. government of being behind the legal process as part of a political revenge.

Wikileaks and its founder are the target of Washington and the Pentagon for revealing in November 2012 nearly 25,000 cables of the Department of State, an action that checkmated the U.S. diplomacy.

During the May 30 hearing, the Supreme Court confirmed that the Australian journalist could be extradited but granted him two weeks to request an appeal review by “procedure matters” given that some elements were not taken into account during the trial.

If the Supreme Court denies the request, Assange can still have a last chance to appeal within seven days to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in the French city of Strasbourg.

If his case can be presented at the ECHR, the 40-year-old editor would have 14 more days so that the European Court issues a statement on the admissibility of the appeal.
