The recent attack on a senior judge in Pakistan’s Karachi city in which nine people including driver of judge’s vehicle were killed was planned from a jail, said Pakistan security officials.

Islamabad, June 29/Nationalturk – In what could be termed as a major security lapse, recent attack on a senior judge in Pakistan’s Karachi city in which nine people including driver of judge’s vehicle were killed was planned from a jail, said Pakistan security officials.

“On the basis of a tip-off that June 26 attack on senior judge of Sindh High Court Justice Maqbool Baqar was planned from Central Jail, Karachi, a large contingent of paramilitary Rangers launched a major search operation in the jail this morning,” security officials said.

In the morning on June 26, militants detonated a bomb planted in a motorcycle  in Karachi when Justice Maqbool Baqar was travelling through the area.  At least nine people including driver of the judge were killed while Justice Baqar was himself injured in the explosion. He was operated in the hospital and his condition is now stated to be stable.

Jail staff was not allowed entry inside Jail

Sources said Rangers men and officials did not allow jail staff and officials to visit the Central Jail today. “They were told to wait for end of the operation. They were told that they can’t move inside till the operation ends”.

They said the Rangers commandos and officials conducted thorough search of each of the barrack and cell in Central Jail. Besides, they checked the belongings of the inmates.

Security officials said a large number of cell phones, laptops and internet devices were recovered from prison cells during the operation. “The weapons were also found in possession of some prisoners. The laptops have been handed to data experts for analysis”.

‘Attack planned from jail with help of mobiles’

“Rangers believe that the attack on Justice Baqar’s convoy was planned from inside the prison cells with the help of mobile devices. Several contact numbers of key suspects involved in carrying out the attack on senior judge were found in the mobile phones,” a senior prison official was quoted as saying by Pakistan’s newspaper, The Dawn.

“The Rangers also found a cellular device which they believe was used directly in the attack Justice Maqbool Baqar,” he said.

Sources said after the search operation, security officials questioned three members of Sunni militant outfit Lashkar-i-Jhangvi, who are under detention in Central Jail, Karachi.

“Further investigations are going on and some arrests are expected,” they said.
