Wimbledon champion Czech tennis player Petra Kvitova beat Belarusian Viktoria Azarenka in the final of the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul to claim her first WTA Championships title Sunday.

Istanbul /NationalTurk – Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic won her first WTA Championships title Sunday, beating Victoria Azarenka of Belarus 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the final of the season-ending WTA Championships in Istanbul for a victory that will also put her at No. 2 in the world rankings behind Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark.

The tight match lasted for almost two-and-a-half hours. Kvitovoa was able to win the decisive break in the very ending of the opener, which she took 7-5. But Azarenka was stronger in the second match.

The Belarusian had to take control of the match in the beginning of the third set, but failed to take advantage of three break points and lost her serve right after that.

It was an advantage, Kvitova, who won all of her games in Turkey, just couldn’t give away, as the 21-year-old cruised to a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 victory.

‘It was unbelievable tennis,’ Petra Kvitova told the Wta Championships Istanbul official website. ‘We were both really fighting. Every game and every set was very close. Maybe I played better on the important points in the match. We both played some of our best here in Istanbul today – it was a final, so why not. The atmosphere is great here’

The Czech player has been the big winner on the season. Besides winning the WTA Championships and Wimbledon, she also lifted the trophies in Brisbane, Paris, Madrid and Linz.

Kvitova began the year ranked 34th by the WTA Rankings, and now finishes 2011 as the World No. 2.

Petra Kvitova took home $1.75 million and Azarenka made $775,000 in the WTA Championship held in Istanbul, Turkey.
