Srinagar, March 13/Nationalturk – In the first major militant attack, five Indian paramilitary soldiers and two heavily armed militants were killed when militants stormed a security camp in Indian administered Kashmir on Wednesday morning.

A police officer, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media, said that heavily armed militants stormed a heavily guarded paramilitary CRPF camp near Bemina Bye-pass, few kilometers North of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian administered Kashmir,  this morning.

He said the militants sneaked into the camp and fired from AK-47 rifles and lobbed grenades towards the paramilitary soldiers.  “The fire was returned by the soldiers, triggering a fierce gunfight. The police and paramilitary commandos were rushed to the spot to flush out the militants”.

The official said in the ensuing firefight, five paramilitary soldiers and two militants were killed. “The firing has stopped and we are conducting search and  combing operation in the area,” he said.

He said bodies of both the militants have been recovered.

Some civilians were also injured: Police

A police spokesman confirmed the militant attack. He said five paramilitary soldiers and two militants have been killed in the encounter. “Some civilians and paramilitary soldiers were also injured in the firefight” he said.

Bemina area is an important location and houses several vital paramilitary and military installations besides the government offices.

The police officials believe that the attack was carried out by suicide squad (fidayeen) of militants. “We suspect the involvement of militants of Pakistan based militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba in the attack,” they said.

However, no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of the attack so far.
