Mali Conflict: Intense Fighting rocks the city of Gao in northern Mali / Africa News

Malian troops and suspected Islamist militants are engaging in a heavy gunfire on the streets of Gao in northern Mai which might be a probably come-back for the Islamist militants.

This latest fighting comes a day after a suicide bomber blew himself up near a checkpoint at a northern entrance to the town – the second such attack in two days.

Gao was retaken just over two weeks ago by French and Malian forces, who supposedly drove out the Islamists to the desert but it seems the Islamist militants have staged a come-back.

Security had been tightened in the wake of the suicide attacks, with military patrols stepped up and checkpoints put in place in the city.

The Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa MUJAO said it had carried out Sunday’s attack on Malian troops as well as both the suicide bombings, according to the AFP news agency reports.

The group spokesman Abou Walid Sahraoui reportedly told local reporters that they will continue to launch series of surprise attacks on French and Malian troops in the subsequent days and they should watch out.

“We are dedicating ourselves to carrying out more attacks against France and its allies. Mr. Sahraoiui said on Saturday.

The most difficult aspect of the situation is that Islamist militants had infiltrated the city and seems to have become reality, as they are waging a guerrilla war in the town.

France last week sort for the support of the United Nations since France say the war seems not to be ending now and wants the UN support.

This come back of the Islamist Militants is not surprise to many political analysts in the sub-region since it was highly anticipated including the French Defence minister who said it will be pre-mature to say the war is over last two weeks.
