Five suspects, including three from the Beşiktaş sports club, were arrested early on Thursday as part of a widening, nationwide, match-fixing probe in Turkey.

One suspect reportedly confessed to have received a race horse as payoff for a sub-par performance in the Turkish cup finals.

Five suspects, including Beşiktaş Deputy Chairman Serdar Adalı and team’s Manager Tayfur Havutçu, who were called to testify as part of the match-fix probe by the İstanbul Police Department and detained after interrogation, were arrested by a court.

Other suspects are the club’s board protocol and security chief, Ahmet Ateş, and İstanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor football players İbrahim Akın and İskender Alın. Specially authorized Public Prosecutor Mehmet Berk interrogated the suspects and referred them to the court for arrest late on Wednesday. Istanbul B.B forward Ibrahim Akın has reportedly confessed to receiving a race horse as payoff for turning in a sub-par performance against Beşiktaş in the Ziraat Turkish Cup finals in May.

All five suspects were transferred to Istanbul Metris Prison early Thursday morning, raising the number of arrested suspects to 31.
