Islamabad, May 5/Nationalturk –NATO containers carrying supplies to NATO mission in Afghanistan was attacked by militants in Jamrud area in Pakistan’s restive Khyber Pakthunkhwa province on Monday, killing two drivers and kidnapping two others.

“Over 20 gunmen fired at NATO containers in Wazir Dhand area of Jamrud, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province on Monday morning. The containers on way to Afghanistan when the militants struck,” official sources said.

They said two drivers of the containers were killed, two others injured and two more were apparently kidnapped by the militants because they are missing after the attack. “Three NATO containers were set on fire by the militants before fleeing from the area,” they said.

The doctors treating injured at government hospital in Jamrud said one of the injured was in critical condition.

Pakistan forces seal area

After the militant attack, police and security men rushed to the area and sealed the area to flush out the militants responsible for the attack. Traffic has been suspended on main Pakistan-Afghan Highway as security forces took control of the area.

Although no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far, but authorities apprehend that the attack may be handiwork of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants, who have claimed responsibility of such attacks in the past.

TTP is presently engaging in talks with the Pakistan government. The militant group called off its 40 days unilateral ceasefire on April 10.

Nato containers were frequently targeted by militants in the past. Pakistan is a major transit supply route for the NATO mission in conflict-hit Afghanistan. Bulk of supplies and equipment required by foreign troops in Afghanistan is shipped through Khyber but US troops have use alternatives routes through central Asia to avoid attacks on containers in Pakistan.
