New Delhi, April 20/Nationalturk- Three days after the brutal rape of a 5-year-old-girl in Indian capital, police on Saturday arrested the main accused while people staged protests in Indian capital.

Police said 22-year-old man Manoj Kumar, who was accused of raping a five-year-old girl in New Delhi, was arrested from Muzaffarpur district of India’s state of Bihar.

“He said arrested from his in-law’s village in the early hours today,” a police official said.

He said police have invoked murder charges against the accused, who was working as labourer in Delhi.

The 5-year-old girl was abducted on April 15 and kept hostage for two days without food and water in a room in New Delhi’s Gandhi Nagar area by the accused.

The girl was raped repeatedly during the two days. She was rescued when members of her family heard her screams on Thursday.

Victim suffered severe injuries: Docs

The doctors attending on the girl said she was brutally raped and has suffered severe injuries in her private parts.

“She has suffered injuries in her private parts and will need to undergo corrective and reconstruction surgery,” said DK Sharma, medical superintendent at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

He said her condition is stable and she is out of danger. “She has been under close observation and monitoring. She has been put on intravenous fluids and antibiotics,” he said adding the girl has been conscious, alert and all her parameters are normal.

Stating that a detailed examination has been conducted on the girl, the doctor said, “A team of eight doctors from various departments has been constituted to look into her case”.

Another doctor said he had never seen such a brutal rape. “A bottle and pieces of candle were found thrust into the private parts of the girl”.

“We found a 200 ml bottle and two or three pieces of candle inserted into her private parts. This is the first time I have seen such barbarism,” he said.

He said there were injuries on her lips, cheeks, arms and anus area, and bruise marks on her neck, suggesting that attempts were made to strangle her.

Protests continue

People from different walks of life staged a protest demonstration outside AIIMS hospital, New Delhi, where the 5-year-old girl is undergoing treatment.

Chanting slogans, the protestors were demanding severe punishment to the rapist. “This incident has brought shame to India and it is high time for authorities to take measures to stop continuous attacks on chastity of women,” they said.

“The government makes laws just for the sake of making them, with no intention to stop crimes. None of the laws are implemented, and we see rapes increasing by the day,” said one of the protestors.

They demanded severe punishment including death penalty to the rapists.

There were also protests outside Delhi Police Headquarters, where protesters accused the cops of failing to act in the case.

A march towards Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde’s residence by rightwing BJP leaders was stopped by Delhi Police. Some of the leaders were detained when they moved towards Parliament.

Meanwhile, Congress President Sonia Gandhi while condemning the rape, said , “Action and not words required to check incidents like this heinous rape of five-year-old girl”.
