Scotland Prepares For Independence Vote

It is extremely scarce: Two weeks before the Scottish referendum bring the separatists rapidly on. The cleavage of Great Britain is, according to pollsters now a “real possibility”.

“Union on a knife edge,” headlined the London “Times” on Tuesday. It was the second time within a few days, that a newspaper resorted to this alarmist headline. For the proof introduced the “Times” to a new survey, which shows a clear change in sentiment in favor of Scottish independence.

47 per cent of Scots would vote for secession from the United Kingdom, according to polling firm YouGov. A month ago it was only 41 percent. Although the independence opponents with 53 percent still in the majority, but the separatists are rapidly catching up. The referendum is on 18 September, so they do not have two weeks.

The independence is now a “real possibility,” said YouGov CEO Peter Kellner. The previously undecided voters change according to the survey the majority of the Yes camp, are so for a spin-off – and in a ratio of 2 to 1 This is not least because the independence campaign is better organized. 85 percent of respondents said that they had been contacted by the Yes campaign. From the No campaign said it only 75 percent.

The new figures startled the London Houses of Parliament Westminster. Until now, it was assumed that the Scots would vote in the referendum already for the status quo. That now even a cautious opinion research institute such as YouGov finds a massive mood swing is a shock.

The campaign manager of the No campaign, Blair McDougall, called the “silent majority” of the Scots, to become more involved in the coming weeks and to fight for the preservation of the United Kingdom.
