A terrible twin blasts in the Nigerian capital; Abuja has killed 72 people and left more than hundred people injured.

Local reporters say the blast happened on Monday in the suburb of Nyanya as people were preparing to go to their work places in the morning.

Sound bite played on the BBC African Service heard eyewitnesses screaming and wailing as dead bodies scattered around the area as emergency service tries to help.

Officials said two separate bombs were hidden in a bus around a busy bus terminal and ripped through the terminal when people were busy looking for vehicle to their work places.

The blast also caused a lot of havoc as 16 luxury coaches and 24 minibuses were destroyed due to the intensity of the blast.

Local reporters say the explosions left a hole roughly four feet deep and spread debris across the area, sending deep fear into local residents.

No group has claimed responsibility of the attack but many people suspect Boko Haram to be behind the attack. Boko Haram bombed the United Nations headquarters in Abuja in 2011 in which 21 people died while 73 people sustained serious body injuries.

Boko Haram killed some 135 people over the weekend in northeastern part of the country. Official figures indicate that more than 1, 500 have been killed by Boko Haram militants this year alone.

President Goodluck Jonathan who visited the place of the incident blamed Boko Haram for the attack despite no claims by the group.

“The issue of Boko Haram is quite an ugly history within this period of our own development, but we will get over it; the issue of Boko Haram is temporary,” President Jonathan said.

President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency in 3 northern states on May 14 last year, and deployed thousands of troops to halt the insurgency, acknowledging that Boko Haram had taken control of some towns and villages in the north.

Nigeria’s security is deteriorating as barely a week passes without Boko Haram militants or any other violence claim innocent lives in the country.

Many political analysts in Nigeria have accused President Jonathan of handling the Boko Haram crisis poorly. They say the army is poorly equipped to engage Boko Haram, making Boko Haram always gaining the upper hand over the military.

Almost 7,000 people have been killed while dozens and dozens of people have been left injured since Boko Haram began their militancy in 2009.
