Congo authorities have said that the tanker overturned at the Sange village after travelling from Tanzania and the dead can increase.

According to authorities, the oil from the tanker had spread into many areas in the village before it set alight covering engulfing many homes in fire.

Congo authorities have sent aid to the village and also deployed helicopters with body bags and to take the injured to nearby hospitals.

The UN had first thought that five peacekeepers in the area had also been killed in the incident which occurred near the border of Congo with Rwanda, but later said that there were not killed.

“A tanker truck coming from Tanzania overturned in the village of Sange,” said Vincent Kabanga, a spokesman for the regional government.

Kabanga continued “There was a crush [of people] and a petrol leak, there was an explosion of fuel oil which spread through the village.”

According to authorities, accidents involving tankers are not uncommon in the country and usually, the casualties are high due to residents trying to collect the oil.
