Mumbai, Nov 22/ NationalTurk –  “Kasab was hanged at Yerwada jail at 0730 hours,” Indian Home Minister Sushil Kumar told reporters this morning.

He said Kasab’s mercy plea was rejected by Indian President Pranab Mukherjee on November 5. “Accordingly it was decided that he will be hanged in Yerwada Jail, Pune at 0730 hours on November 21,” he said.

It was the first time a capital sentence had been carried out in India since 2004.
The Indian government maintained utmost secrecy over its plans considering the sensitivity of the issue.

Shinde said Pakistan has been informed about Kasab’s execution via fax.
He said India’s External Affairs Ministry through our mission in Islamabad had informed the Pakistan government about Kasab’s hanging. “When they did not accept the letter, they were communicated through fax,” he said.

Indian Home Secretary R K Singh said family members of Kasab, who live in Pakistan, had also been informed by Indian High Commission in Islamabad.

“His family members were communicated through courier by our High Commission. We have the receipt of the courier sent and that was later given to the Maharashtra government,” he said.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan told reporters that Kasab was buried inside the premises of Pune’s Yerawada Central Jail shortly after he was hanged.

Media reports quoted jail officials as saying that Kasab was kept under tight security until the time of his hanging. All rules as per the jail manual were followed.

Kasab had been lodged in the Arthur Jail Road in Mumbai ever since he was arrested immediately after the attack in November 2008. He was convicted and given capital punishment by the trial court on May 6, 2010 which was upheld by the Bombay High Court on February 21, 2011.

The Supreme Court subsequently upheld the sentence on August 29 this year.

Kasab and nine other gunmen entered Mumbai by boat on November 26, 2008. Carrying mobile phones, hand grenades and automatic weapons, they fanned out across Mumbai targeting luxury hotels Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident, a Jewish centre Chabad House and the city’s main train station Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST).

While nine of the militants were shot dead, Kasab was captured alive. The November 26-29, 2008 terror siege had claimed 166 lives.
