Pakistan asks foreign diplomats to restrict movement in Karachi

Pakistan has asked foreign diplomats in the country to restrict their movement in port city of Karachi.

Islamabad, June 26/Nationalturk – Fearing militant reprisal attacks following launch of military operation in country’s lawless North Waziristan tribal agency, Pakistan has asked foreign diplomats to restrict their movement in port city of Karachi.

Pakistan Foreign Office sent a letter to foreign diplomats based in Karachi to restrict their movement in the port city.

They have been advised to be vigilant and cautious in view of the security situation in the metropolis.

The letter was to consulate generals and representatives of several countries, who are based in Karachi, requesting them to restrict movement and avoid unnecessary travel in the port city.

The diplomats have also been advised to stay in touch with the city police officials regarding their movement so that adequate security can be provided to them.

The diplomats have also been advised to refrain from visiting major shopping centres of the metropolis.

Militants stormed Karachi airport early this month

A group of heavily armed terrorists stormed Pakistan’s busiest airport, Karachi Airport in Sindh province early this month. At least 39 people including 10 attackers, who were Uzbeki nationals, were killed in the attack.

After the attack, Pakistan government approved military operation in lawless North Wazirstan tribal agency, where most of the militant groups were operation from. Pakistan jets have been bombing militant hideouts and havens and there were reports that Pakistan army has launched ground assault today.

After the launch of military operation, Pakistan security agencies have upped security across the country fearing reprisal militant attacks.

In one such reprisal attacks, militants fired on a passenger plane in Pakistan’s Peshawar airport on Tuesday evening, causing death of a woman passenger and injuries to two flight stewards.
