Pakistan military is pounding the militant strongholds in country’s lawless North Waziristan tribal agency from air, causing heavy casualties on militants.

Islamabad, June 17/Nationalturk – Pakistan military is pounding the militant strongholds in country’s lawless North Waziristan tribal agency, where an all out operation has been launched to flush out the local and foreign militants hiding there.

Pakistani security officials said jet fighters conducted air strikes on militant strongholds and positions in Mir Ali, Mirali town and other areas of North Waziristan tribal agency today.

“At least eight hideouts of militants were destroyed in the fresh air strikes.  About 50 militants including foreigners were killed in the air strikes today,” they said adding over 250 militants have been killed in aerial strikes in the tribal agency since Sunday.

Pakistan military launched operation code-named Zarb-e-Azb against militants in North Waziristan tribal agency following a deadly militant raid on Pakistan’s busiest Karachi airport in Sindh province. At least 39 people including 10 attackers were killed in the terror attack.

Pak PM calls Afghan prez

Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, who has justified the military operation against terrorists, called Afghanistan President Hamid Karazai last evening and discussed issues on regional security.

“Nawaz sought cooperation from the Afghan President and urged him to seal the porous Pak-Afghan border so that militants don’t flee to that side to escape military operation in North Waziristan,” source said.

Earlier, while addressing Pakistan’s National Assembly, Nawaz had said, “Operation Zarb-e-Azb, which has been launched to purge the country of terrorism, will continue till the realisation of all our objectives”.

‘Won’t allow our land to became safe haven for terrorists’

“The military operation was launched with mutual consultation and complete harmony between the military and political leadership. We will not allow the land of Pakistan to become safe haven for terrorists. The government had tried its utmost to make dialogue process result-oriented but the terrorists persisted with bloodshed and violence,” Pakistan PM said adding terrorism and dialogue could not go side by side.

In a related development, Pakistan army chief General Raheel Sharif today cancelled his visit to Sri Lanka due to the ongoing operation in North Waziristan Agency.

General Raheel was scheduled to travel to Colombo on Tuesday for a four-day trip. However the military’s media wing says the visit has been called off because of military operation in tribal agency.
