Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said his country was fully capable of defending itself.

Islamabad, May 28/Nationalturk – A day after returning from India following holding of talks with country’s newly elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday said his country was fully capable of defending itself.

“Pakistan is fully capable of defending itself against any possible aggressive designs,” Nawaz said while addressing a gathering organised to mark Youm-i-Takbeer, the day when country became nuclear.

On this day in 1998, Pakistan became world’s seventh nuclear power by testing nuclear devices.

While congratulating the nation, Nawaz said Pakistan’s nuclear assets were in safe hands and for peaceful purposes.

He said the country should instead concentrate on economic progress.

‘We are still engulfed in darkness’

Concerned over lack of amenities in the country, he said, “What kind of nuclear power are we if we are still engulfed in darkness instead of light. We have illiteracy instead of education. We have more unemployed people than those with jobs and more terrorism and less peace”.

Referring to prevailing electricity crisis in the country, Nawaz said, “We are hopeful about ending the power crisis soon. Our government is in talks with the Chinese leadership to set up more power plants to meet the country’s energy demands.”

Pakistan PM held meeting with Indian newly elected premier Narendra Modi in Indian capital yesterday. Sharif also attended the swearing-in ceremony of Modi on May 26.

Rallies, processions held

The rallies, processions and demonstrations were held across the country to mark the day country went nuclear.

The workers of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lit candles besides holding cake cutting ceremony to mark the day in a befitting manner and paid tributes to the leadership of the then Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif who did not accept external pressure” and opted for nuclear tests to consolidate the country’s defense.
