Pakistan, Turkey to cooperate in power sector

Pakistan and Turkey have agreed to form a technical working group to chalk out ways for working together.

Islamabad, May 2/Nationalturk  – Pakistan and Turkey have agreed to cooperate in power sector and will form a technical working group to chalk out ways for working together.

While Pakistan has on its agenda privatisation of power distribution companies, Turkey has successfully done so and created a multi-buyer and multi-sector electricity market.

Pakistan’s Secretary Water and Power Saifullah Chatta is currently in Turkey. He is heading  a three-member delegation and they are in Turkey to learn from the Turkish experience in privatization of electricity sector.

Pakistan plans to privatize hydel power projects

Pakistan plans to privatize country’s hydel  power projects while Turkey has already made successful privatization of the power distribution companies and created a multi-buyer and multi-sector electricity market.

Pakistan could sensitize entrepreneurs about the privatization plans and would showcase potential projects in the hydel, coal and renewable energy sector to Turkish investors.

Pakistani officials met Secretary of  Turkish Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, Metin Kilci yesterday.

Kilci told the delegation that Turkey generated about $50 billion by privatising its power sector. “As   a result of privatisation, the public sector is saving over $10bn a year. Similarly, line losses were also reduced substantially in the post-privatisation era”.

‘Turkish entrepreneurs would be interest in investing in Pakistan’

Turkey’s Deputy Director General of State Hydraulic Works, Yakup Basogulu informed the Pakistani officials that his country’s entrepreneurs have great experience in hydro projects, and that the country’s investors would be interested in such projects in Pakistan.

The Pakistan delegation will also hold talks with the executives of Turkish companies in the renewable energy sector in Istanbul to review progress on the ongoing Turkish projects in Pakistan and discuss new initiatives.

Pakistan and Turkey enjoy good friendly relationship.
