A Pakistani diplomat was allegedly assaulted by a group of people in Indian capital after an accident last evening. India has arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the assault.

New Delhi, June 4/Nationalturk – A Pakistani diplomat and his driver were allegedly assaulted by a group of people in Indian capital after an accident last evening. Pakistan has lodged a protest with India and termed the incident as unfortunate while India has arrested two people for their alleged involvement in the assault.

Giving details Pakistan High Commission spokesman in India Manzoor Ali Memon said Zargam Raza, the First Secretary (Trade), was going to his home in Vasant Kunj from the mission in Chanakyapuri in New Delhi (Indian capital), when two persons riding on a motorcycle hurled abuses at him near the Jawaharlal Nehru University.

“Zargam Raza and his driver were assaulted at around 1830 hours. When the diplomat objected to the abuse, he and his driver were beaten up by some people,” he said.

‘Diplomat and his driver sustained injuries’

He said the diplomat and his driver sustained injuries and were provided medical treatment.

Memon said they have lodged an FIR with police. “A protest has been lodged with Indian government with a call to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to book,” he said.

Indian TV news channel, NDTV quoted Delhi Police officials as saying the car of Pakistan’s diplomat hit a motorcycle in Ber Sarai near the Jawaharlal Nehru University campus in South Delhi last evening. “It was a freak accident and pillion rider, a woman, fell down and sustained minor bruises”.

“A scuffle ensued, and Raza’s driver got minor injuries. The diplomat got out and tried to separate the warring parties and that’s when he got pushed around by several men,” they added.

The cops later took Raza away to a police station to prevent the crowd from manhandling him.  “Raza also received a bruise when he intervened in the matter”.

After the incident, Pakistan High Commission in India has asked Indian government to ensure safety and security of its staff in line with the Vienna Convention and international diplomatic practices.

Pakistan lodges protest with Indian government

Pakistan Foreign office spokesman in Islamabad termed the incident as unfortunate.

“A protest has been launched with the Indian government with a call to investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the perpetrators to the book,” the spokesman was quoted as having said by Pakistan’s newspaper, The News.

Meanwhile, police in Indian capital have arrested two people alleged involved in the assault on Pakistan diplomat.

The two have been charged under Section 279 (rash and negligent driving) and Section 336 (act of endangering life).

Incidents of Pakistani and Indian diplomats being roughed up is nothing uncommon and comes at a time when Pakistan’s Prime Minister designate Nawaz Sharif and Indian PM Manmohan Singh have been in touch even before the PML-N chief forms a next government in the country on June 5.
