A Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was serving a life term, was critically injured when he was attacked by a Hindu prisoner inside high-security Kot Balwal jail in Indian administered Kashmir on Friday.

New Delhi, May 3/Nationalturk – A Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah Ranjay, who was serving a life term, was attacked by a Hindu prisoner inside high-security Kot Balwal jail in Indian administered Kashmir on Friday, causing critical injuries to him.

Sources said 52-year-old Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah was attacked with a sharp weapon by a Hindu prisoner Vinod Kumar in Kot Balwal jail in Jammu, winter capital of Indian administered Kashmir.

They said Sanaullah sustained serious injuries in head and multiple fractures and was shifted to Government Medical College hospital, Jammu in an unconscious condition. He was later flown to Chandigarh hospital in Indian state of Punjab for specialized treatment.

“A case of assault was registered against Vinod Kumar, an ex-serviceman who is also serving a life term in the jail. Kumar hails from Indian State of Uttrakhand,” sources said.

They said the health condition of Sanaullah was stated to be very critical as he was hit with a very sharp weapon in head.

Sources said Sanaullah was arrested on April 1999 in connection with five cases related to militancy related activities. The attack took place a day after 49-year-old Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who was on a death row in Pakistan, died to injuries sustained by him during brutal attack by two fellow prisoners in Pakistan’s high security jail in Lahore.

They said Indian administered Kashmir government has ordered a probe and suspended Kot Balwal’s jail superintendent Rajni Sehgal. “The other subordinate staff of the jail has also been suspended for negligence of duty”.

Guilty would be punished: India

India regretted that attack on a Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah in a high security jail in Indian administered Kashmir.

“The incident was being investigated and the guilty would be punished,” Indian foreign Affairs spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin told reporters in New Delhi.

He said an advisory had been issued to strengthen security for Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. “Safety and security of Pakistani prisoners in custody lies with the jail authorities and necessary action was being taken. We are in touch with the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi on the matter,” he said.

The spokesman said the injured is receiving medical treatment and once the medical arrangements are in place consular access will be provided.

Ensure safety of Pakistani citizens: Pakistan

Pakistan has asked India to ensure the safety and security of all its citizens being held in prison.

“We have learnt with deep concern that Sanaullah, who was serving life imprisonment in a jail (in Jammu and Kashmir), was attacked this morning and as a result has received grievous injuries,” said Pakistani Foreign Office spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry.

He said Pakistan High Commission in New Delhi has sought immediate consular access to visit Sanaullah.

“The Indian government should take all measures to ensure that Sanaullah receives the best medical treatment available, investigate the matter thoroughly and punish the perpetrators of this atrocity”, Aizaz said.

He described the attack on Sanaullah as an obvious retaliation to the death of Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh and said it was “condemnable”.

“Pakistan has sought immediate transfer of Sanaullah to Pakistan for treatment purposes,” he added.
