Pakistan’s former military ruler wants heart treatment abroad

Pakistan’s former military ruler and president General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf, who is facing treason charges for imposing emergency in November 2007,  needs immediate angiography but he wants to get it done abroad.

Islamabad, Jan 24/Nationalturk – Pakistan’s former military ruler and president General (Retd) Parvez Musharraf, who is facing treason charges for imposing emergency in November 2007,  has expressed his desire to undergo angiography for heart treatment abroad.

His medical report was submitted in the court today by the medical board constituted by special court hearing his treason charges.

According to the medical report, Musharraf’s health is such that a heart attack could be “life-threatening”.

It suggested that the former president should get an angiography as soon as possible.

‘Not willing to undergoing angiography in Pakistan’

“Musharraf is not willing to get an angiography in Pakistan as the cardiac support system in the country is not up to the standard,” the report was quoted as saying by Pakistan newspaper, Express Tribune.

The report said it is crucial to decide about his angiography urgently.

The special court had on January 16 had ordered the formation of a medical board comprising senior doctors of the Armed Forces Institute of Cardiology (AFIC) for ascertaining the health condition of Musharraf and had directed that the medical board should submit its report by January 24.

7-year-old Musharraf is presently undergoing treatment AFIC, Rawalpindi. He had fallen ill and was taken to the AFIC, Rawalpindi on January 2 as he was being transported under heavy guard to the court.

Court to announce verdict on Jan 29

After hearing the arguments, special court headed by Justice Faisal Arab and comprising Justice Tahira Safdar and Justice Yawar Ali hearing the high treason case adjourned the hearing till January 29. The court ruled that former president’s medical report would be subjected to cross examination on January 29 after which the court would announce its decision.

Pakistan government’s prosecutor objected to the findings of the medical report, which was submitted by a four-member medical board headed Maj General Syed Muhammad Imran Majeed.

Musharraf was accused of treason under Article 6 for suspending, subverting and abrogating the Constitution, imposing an emergency in the country in November 2007 and detaining judges of the superior courts.
