The group made of hundreds of Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) supporters, mostly consisting of teenagers and children blocked the main road leading to the Cizre district Southeastern Turkey close to the border of Iraq and Syria.

The main reason behind Monday’s protests were due to an incident on Friday where a PKK militant was killed and another arrested after being caught red-handed by Turkish police officials as they were suspected of planting a road side bomb in the main road of Cizre.

The PKK supporters burnt tires and obstructed the road with bin containers and whatever objects they got hold of.

The group then stoned a government building on the Cizre road before stoning police officials which came to disburse the group.

Many shops and stores were also closed in Cizre on Monday, which is seen as a form of protest by the shop keepers, however some also have said that if they did not close the shops, they could have become targets of angry groups.

One shop keeper that National Turk spoke to, who declined to be named said “when we open shops during protests, we become direct targets of the stones.” said the grocery store owner who was targeted by protesters in the past

“My shop has been stoned and all windows shattered when I opened my store during a planned protest last year,” said the distressed shop owner.

The shop owner continued “Many shopkeepers do close their shops in support of the protests… but many also remain closed because they are scared that their shops will be burnt, stoned or even looted.

The violence is still continuing at Cizre.
