Swiss experts have examined tissue on the chest and soil samples around the grave, they found highly elevated polonium-values: The doctors expect that Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat was probably poisoned. If that suspicion is confirmed, who is behind it ?

The symptoms have passed to a polonium poisoning: Abdominal pain and diarrhea. But the illness of the then 75-year-old could not have been caused by something else? Right after Yasser Arafat’s death has been speculated that he was murdered or not. That immediately after his death, but not until eight years later an autopsy took place, which fueled speculation further.

Of the three forensic teams that examine the remains of Arafat in a year, the Swiss have now submitted their findings. Hundred percent safe, Swiss researchers are not. However, with “moderate” security, they note: There is much more that Arafat was poisoned with polonium than not. The reports of the French and Russian research teams are still pending.

It is an intractable mystery to scientists. As clear as Arafat’s widow is the thing it is not.

What makes the investigation so difficult is that polonium mainly intercalates into tissue instead of bone. Since Arafat’s body was exhumed, however, only eight years after his death, almost only the skeleton was left of it. Only at the chest and abdomen was still some tissue. What’s more: The radioactive polonium-210 decays quickly. Would it be eight years later to prove something ?
