PM Erdogan’s 45-Kilometer ‘Istanbul Canal’ Will Keep Tankers From Bosporus

Crazy project for Istanbul Pm Erdogan
Turkish PM Erdogans' Crazy Poject ''The Istanbul Canal''

Turkey has finally its magnificent and crazy project for ages, which will exceed the greatness of Suez and Panama Canals, stated Prime Minister Erdogan.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a big conference in Istanbul, Turkey will build a new 45-kilometer canal from the Black Sea to the Marmara, creating two peninsulas and an island in Istanbul and diverting tanker traffic away from the Bosporus.

The “Istanbul Canal,” which will be between 145 meters and 150 meters wide and 25 meters deep, will carry as many as 160 ships per day including the world’s largest oil tankers, Erdogan said in a speech in Istanbul today. He declined to specify how much the project will cost. Planning will take two years, he said.

Turkey is seeking to keep ship traffic, a perennial threat, away from the Bosporus, a winding waterway that runs through the middle of the city of 12 million people. Erdogan, a former mayor of Istanbul, and his governing party are seeking re-election on June 12.

Project is crazy and magnificent

New bridges and highways will be built over the canal, which will be flanked by hotels and residintial areas, Erdogan said.

Erdogan has kept what he called the “Crazy Project” for Istanbul secret for months. The exact location and funding of the project are kept secret from the public due to prevention of unearned income. Erdogan’s Justice and Development Party runs the city with mayor Kadir Topbas.
