In a matter of concern, number of cancer cases and deaths due to the disease are witnessing steep increase in India.

New Delhi, Feb 12/Nationalturk –  The number of cancer cases and deaths due to the disease are on rise in India.

“As per data provided by National Cancer Registry Programme of Indian  Council  of Medical Research (ICMR), the number of cancer cases and deaths are increasing in our country,” Indian Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad informed Rajya Sabha, upper house of Indian parliament.

According to statistics, 1028502  cancer cases were reported in 2011. “The figure increased 1057203 in 2012 and 1086783 in 2013”.

It further disclosed that there were 452541 estimated cancer deaths in India in 2011. “The figure rose to 465169 in 2011 and at least 478185 cancer deaths were reported in India in 2013”.

Many factors may be involved: Indian Health minister

Indian Health minister said increase in number of cancer cases in India may be attributed to ageing population, unhealthy lifestyles, use of tobacco and tobacco products, unhealthy diet, better diagnostic facilities etc.

He said Indian government supplements the efforts of the State governments in country for improving healthcare including prevention, diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

“At present, the National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS) being implemented for interventions up to the district level includes Cancer prevention, screening, early detection and referral to an appropriate level Institution for treatment,” he said adding Indian government recently approved a scheme for enhancing the Tertiary Care Cancer facilities in the country.

Azad said treatment of cancer in government institutions is either free or subsidized.
