Speedy train kills 35 in India, irate mob sets trains on fire

A speedy train has killed at least 35 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims at a remote and poorly connected area at Dhamara Ghat in Indian State of Bihar on Monday.

New Delhi, Aug 19/Nationalturk- At least 35 people, mostly Hindu pilgrims, were killed and many others injured  when a speedy train ran over them at a remote and poorly connected area at Dhamara Ghat in Indian State of Bihar on Monday.

Official sources said train (Rajya Rani Express) ran over people while they were crossing the tracks   at Dhamara Ghat in Bihar this morning.

They said that 35 people have been killed and dozens others injured in the tragic accident. The injured have been admitted in local hospitals and doctors attending on them said the death toll may go up as many have suffered “life threatening” injuries.

Officials said victims were mostly Hindu pilgrims, who were going to Hindu Katyayni temple in the area.

“There was a huge rush of pilgrims at the temple. Dhamara Ghat is famous for Katyani temple and large number of Hindu devotees visit the temple every year,” they said.

Sources said most of the victims had alighted from another train when the speeding train ran over them.

After the accident, train services were suspended on the route for the time being.

Indian Railway Board Chairman also said the train was running as per its scheduled route and some people were walking on the tracks at the time of the accident. “People should not have been on the tracks, there are always warnings”

“The railway authorities have ordered an inquiry into the incident,” sources said.

Mob sets trains on fire, beats driver

The death of Hindu devotees in the tragic accident infuriated the locals and other Hindu devotees in the area.

“The driver of the train was beaten ruthlessly by the locals and Hindu devotees. He suffered critical injuries and has been hospitalized. The mob also pelted stones on the trains that had halted on the station. They set some of bogies of the trains on fire. The mob also manhandled the railway staff at the station and vandalised the railway station and damaged government property,” official sources said.

They said bodies of people, who died in tragic rail accident, lay on the rail tracks for couple of hours as violence made it difficult for authorities to send rescue and relief teams to spot.

They said later top civil, railway and police officials managed to reach the spot to take stock of the situation. “The bodies were later shifted to local hospitals”.
