Suicide bombing kills 10 in Pakistan

At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured when a suicide bomber blew himself up near a security checkpoint in Peshawar, Pakistan on Friday.

Islamabad, March 29/Nationalturk – At least 10 people were killed and 20 others injured, some of them critically, when a suicide bomber targeting a top paramilitary Frontier Constabulary (FC) official blew himself up near a security checkpoint in Peshawar, Pakistan on Friday.

“A suicide bomber targeted an FC convoy in which Abdul Majeed Marwat, a top paramilitary commander was travelling. The suicide bomber blew himself up near a checkpost at Fakhar-e-Alam Road in Saddar Cantonment area of Peshawar,” a security official said.

He said the suicide bomber, who was either travelling on foot or motor bike, detonated his suicide vest when the convoy of the FC commander stopped at a military check post in the busy cantonment area of Peshawar.

Officials said 10 people were killed and 20 others injured in the bombing and the FC commander escaped with minor injuries.  The injured persons were rushed to different hospitals and condition of some of them is said to be critical.

“FC commander survived the attack and was taken to a military hospital with only minor injuries. It was a suicide attack, the target was the FC commander,” Pakistan’s newspaper The News quoted police official Arshad Khan as saying.

10 kgs explosives used in blast

According to experts of bomb disposal squad, who were rushed to the spot after the blast, approximately 10 kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

Immediately after the explosion, the area was sealed off by the soldiers. The soldiers were conducting searches to look for possible associates of the suicide bomber.

No militant outfit has claimed the responsibility of the attack so far. However, security officials believe that militant outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) would be responsible for the bombing.

The blast took place in a high-security zone with the US Consulate only 500 yards away from the site of the explosion and the army’s corps headquarter half a kilometer away from it.
