A Sunni leader was targeted by assailants in Pakistan’s Karachi city on Tuesday, killing six persons.

Karachi, Dec 25/Nationalturk- A Sunni leader was targeted by unidentified assailants in Pakistan’s commercial capital Karachi on Tuesday, killing six persons including four policemen and his security guard.

Police said Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat (ASWJ) leader Maulana Aurangzeb Farooqui was attacked by unknown gunmen outside a madrassah in Gulshan-e-Iqbal area of Karachi this afternoon.

“Farooqui was hit in the leg by a bullet and was immediately rushed to hospital. The doctors attending on him have termed his condition as ‘not critical’,” police officials said.

They said the attack left six persons including four police men and a security guard of Farooqui dead.

Karachi police chief Iqbal Mehmood said initial investigations have indicated that the gunmen were on a motorcycle and fired indiscriminately on Farooqui’s cavalcade.

Pakistan’s newspaper Express Tribune quoted ASWJ spokesperson Akbar Saeed as saying that Farooqui was now out of danger after being treated at the Liaquat National hospital.

He urged the workers and supporters to remain calm and not stage violent protests.

Tension grips Karachi

As the news spread that Farooqui’s has been targeted, the tension gripped major part of Karachi. The shopkeepers and businessmen pulled shutters of their establishments in several areas including Nagan Chowrangi, Abul Hasan Isphahani Road, Stadium Road, Guru Mandir and Patel Para.

Youth took to roads at several places and pelted stones on the vehicles. Two cars were set ablaze by the irate mob near Rizvia Colony and Waterpump areas in Karachi.

After the attack, the security apparatus across Karachi has been beefed up.
