Swiss skier killed in avalanche in Indian Kashmir

A Swiss national was killed and two others injured after being hit by an avalanche in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in Indian Kashmir.

New Delhi, Jan 24/Nationalturk: A national of Switzerland was killed and two others injured after being hit by an avalanche during skiing in world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in Indian Kashmir.

Police said 59-year-old Swiss skier Arno Roy alongwith his associates were hit by avalanche at Hapat Khur near Afarwat in Gulmarg ski resort yesterday afternoon.

“A rescue operation was immediate launched. After an hour-long effort, the rescue team managed to reach the place where the foreign skiers were trapped. Roy was found dead. Two other skiers accompanying Roy had sustained minor injuries. They were rescued and provided immediate treatment,” police said.

A top government official said medico Legal formalities of the deceased are being completed and Swiss embassy in New Delhi (Indian capital) has been informed about the incident.

‘Inquiry ordered’

Authorities have ordered inquiry into the incident to ascertain the cause of death of a Swiss national Arno Roy.

The investigating officer appointed by the authorities has been asked to submit the report within five days to the government.

Local media reports quoted officials as saying that the Swiss group had gone out of the designated area during skiing. They said despite warning and advisories, some skiers do skiing in the areas which are not patrolled by ski patrol teams for safety of the skiers.

Gulmarg and other upper reaches of Indian Kashmir received heavy snowfall earlier this week.
