Syria elections set for May 7

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad issued a decree on Tuesday setting the date for new national legislative elections on May 7, on the grounds of the new Constitution adopted on February 22.

At that time, says the presidential decree, the first round of elections will take place, involving for the first time political organizations that are not member of the government alliance led by the Al-Baath Arab Socialist Party, and some of them are in the opposition.

The vote to choose the parliamentarians of the People’s Assembly is part of the comprehensive reform boosted by the administration of al-Assad in response to demands from the people to achieve more democratic pluralism in Syria.
