WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has begun publishing more than two million emails from Syrian political figures, ministries and companies that have been associated with the Syrian country.

The WikiLeaks website releases over two milion embarrassing electronic messages from Syrian government officials that would shame not only Damascus, which is trying to crush a sixteen-month rebellion, but also its adversary.

WikiLeaks the highly controversial whistleblowing group said in a statement the emails were from Syrian political figures, government ministries and companies, during six years from August 2006 to March 2012.

WikiLeaks announcement came a day after Russia denied having discussed with United States offering exile to Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad. It also came ahead of a meeting in Paris of the ‘ Friends of Syria ‘ group of countries, which support difficult action against Bashar Hafez al-Assad’s government.

Sarah Harrison – Wikileaks supporter has told the emails from the Syrian ministries of presidential affairs, foreign affairs, finance, information, transport and culture are all depicted among the data to be released.

The latest exposures could throw fresh light on the workings of the Syrian regime and its interactions with allies in the run-up to and during the current bloody crackdown.

Australian computer programmer, political and internet activist, publisher, journalist and WikiLeaks promoter Julian Assange, who is holed up in Ecuador’s embassy in London where he is trying to avoid extradition to Sweden over accusations of rape and sexual assault, wrote in a statement: ‘ The material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria’s external opponents. It helps us not  to criticise one group or another, but to understand their interests. ‘

WikiLeaks has informed that the range of information extends from the intimate correspondence of the most senior Baath party figures to records of financial transfers sent from Syrian ministries to other nations.

Sarah Harrison has quoted Julian Assange saying that this WikiLeaks material helps the world not merely to criticise one group or another, but to understand their interests, actions and thoughts. It is only through understanding this conflict that they can hope to resolve it as soon as possible.
