Syrian children presumed as ' human shields '

Syrian government forces used Syrian children as human shields and subjected them to torture and execution, kill or sexually attack in armed conflicts. Syrian military have tortured children, executed and finally used them as human shields during military raids against protesters.

The United Nations reporter said that Syrian children as young as eight – nine years old were victims of killing and maiming, arbitrary arrest, detention, torture, and sexual violence, and have been used as human shields. He added also : ‘ In almost all recorded cases, children were among the victims of military operations by government forces, including the Syrian armed forces, the intelligence forces and the shabiha militia, in their ongoing conflict with the opposition, including the Free Syrian Army. ‘

Children have been used by troops and army members as human shields, placing them in front of the windows of buses carrying military personnel into the invasion on the village. Quoting witnesses of the Syrian victims, surrounded the village for an attack lasted more than 4 days. Amidst the eleven dead on the first day were three boys between the ages 15 to 17. Another 34 people, including two boys aged 14 and 16 and a 9-year-old girl, have been arrested.

The UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy has told that while new crises broke out in 2011 ‘ with a heavy toll on children such as in Syria, and also in Libya, violations against girls and boys have come to an end in other parts of the world. ‘

The suffering of Syrian young children was unusual even for conflict situations, because for the first time we heard of children being recruited by the Free Syrian Army mainly in medical and service orientated jobs but still on the front line of war. Ban Ki-moon – the United Nations chief  said that the report had uncovered one of many ‘ grave violations ‘ against children in Syria.
