Pakistan has asserted that Syrian people should decide their future set up.

Islamabad, April 17/Nationalturk –  Not following its key ally Saudi Arabia’s on Syria, Pakistan Thursday asserted that Syrian people should decide their future set up.

“Pakistan does not interfere in matters of other countries and it is for the people of Syria to decide their future set up,” Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson, Tasnim Aslam, told weekly press briefing here.

She said Pakistan has urged all the sides in Syria to exercise restraint for peace and security.

Pakistan is close ally of Saudi Arabia, which the main backer of rebels in Syria. Saudi Arabia has been providing money to rebels to help them topple Syrian president Bashar Al Assad’s regime.

However, Assad’s forces have in recent past gained ground in fighting in the country and taken some key areas from the rebels.

‘Pakistan wants end of violence in Syria’

“There is no pressure on Pakistan to take a certain position regarding Syria. We only want to see an end of violence there and easy access of Syrian people to humanitarian supplies,” Pakistan foreign office spokesperson said.

There have been media reports that Saudi Arabia intended to purchase arms including anti-aircraft guns and anti-tank rockets from Pakistan for Syrian rebels. However, Pakistan has repeatedly denied that it intends to sell ammunition to Saudi Arabia, which can be used by Syrian rebels.

The over 3-year conflict in Syria has torn the country apart, killing more than 150,000 people.

Syrian regime has been accusing Saudi Arabia of arming and providing money to “terrorists”, the term it uses for rebels.
