A 17-year-old girl died and three schoolmates were injured when their school bus crashed in “absolutely atrocious” conditions as they travelled on an end-of-term trip to Alton Towers.
The 17-year-old girl who has not been named yet,was among a party of 38 pupils and five members of staff from Lanark grammar school who had left before dawn as blizzard conditions gripped large areas of Scotland.
Ambulances and a rescue helicopter were sent to the crash scene, near Biggar in South Lanarkshire, and casualties were taken to hospital in Wishaw.
The teenage girl was found lying underneath the coach, which was on its side partly submerged in the stream and partly up on the bank. She had apparently been thrown out of the sunroof. Her death was reported at noon.
A police spokesman said that the weather conditions in the area were “horrendous”. The accident happened as the bus approached a left-hand bend. The bus lost control and fell into the river crashing through the bridge wall.
