Being a manager at a football club is a perilous job, even more perilous if you are a manager in Turkey. Former Turkish Super League side Sakaryaspor’s manager became latest victim of this hazardous job and sacked in a most unorthodox fashion.

On a live local tv show in Sakarya, a northwestern province in Turkey, the audience witnessed the sacking of their club’s manager Saban Yildirim by the Sakaryaspor board member, Cihan Yildiran. The Sakaryaspor executive has justified the boards decision on sacking the coach, who led the team to a championship in Turkish Second League Category A back in 2006: The manager had humiliated the club, the fans and the board of Sakaryaspor in various media statements.

Turkish Football : A weird social formation

The club executive joined the tv show via phone, while sports columnist were discussing the current state of Sakaryaspor and the players performances and announced the decision of Sakaryaspor’s board. The host and the guests of the show argued with the executive after the initial shock and called the decision as ”This is being busy with trifles”. The board members response to this claim was solely a ” Yes, it could be”.

Sakaryaspor is football club of tradition in Turkey and is best known for their succesful youth player ranks, which include Turkish star footballers such as Hakan Sükür, Bülent Uygun, Oktay Derelioğlu and Tuncay Şanlı. The club seeks its former glories, as they had participated Turkish Super League in 1981-86, 1987–90, 1998–99, 2004–05, 2006–07, won the Turkish Cup in 1988 and played at European Cup Winners’ Cup the following year.
