The Revenant wins top honors at Golden GlobesThe Revenant dominated film categories of the 2016 Golden Globe Awards Sunday night with three top honors, including best motion picture drama.

The gritty frontier epic also took home best director award for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and best actor in a drama for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Set in early 19th century America, the film depicts the survival story of frontiersman and fur trapper Hugh Glass.

The Martian was named the best motion picture comedy, with its star, Matt Damon, winning the best actor award in that genre.

Brie Larson, who plays a mother held captive in a tiny shed in the escape film Room, won the best actress in a drama.

Jennifer Lawrence took home her third Golden Globe by winning best actress in a comedy with her performance in the comedy-drama Joy, directed by David O. Russell.

One of the highlights of the night in Los Angeles was Sylvester Stallone, who won the best supporting actor for his classic role of Rocky in the sports drama Creed.

“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had,” the veteran actor said upon receiving the prize. The no-name boxer who overcame all obstacles to become a champion became a part of the American cultural lexicon.

Other winners include Ennio Morricone for his original score in The Hateful Eight and Kate Winslet for her supporting role in Steve Jobs.

Son of Saul, a motion picture from Hungary, won the prize in the best foreign language category. Mustang, directed by Turkish filmmaker Deniz Gamze Erguven, was among the nominees in that category.

The Golden Globes are considered second only to the Academy awards in importance for film and is closely observed as a precursor to the Oscars. The ceremony is frequently among television’s most-watched events (Anadolu Agency).
