In a tit-for-tat reaction, India has arrested top police officer of New York Police last month for allegedly carrying three bullets in his luggage.

New Delhi, April 5/Nationalturk –A top officer of New York Police has been arrested in India last month for allegedly carrying three bullets in his luggage.

According to US newspaper, New York Post, senior official of New York Police Department (NYPD) Manny Encarnacion was arrested by Indian security men at Indira Gandhi international airport in capital New Delhi on March 10 for  traveling with three bullets in his checked luggage.

The newspaper said 49-year-old Encarnacion was charged with violating country’s Arms Act of 1959 — and is facing up to seven years in an Indian prison. He is forbidden from leaving the country until his next court date, April 19

‘Encarnacion was at firing range two days before his visit’

The New York Post quoted sources as saying that two days before his trip to India to meet his wife, Encarnacion was at an NYPD firing range taking his required recertification.

“Encarnacion, who is assigned to the 25th Precinct, tucked three spare rounds into his jacket pocket, and forgot about them. The bullets were still in the pocket when he packed his jacket in his suitcase,” it said.

The arrest of US police official is seen as tit-for-tat for its diplomat’s arrest in US.

India’s deputy consul-general in US Devyani Khobragade was arrested for alleged visa fraud involving her nanny in December. It angered India, which claimed that Devyani was enjoying diplomatic immunity. The bust sparked outrage across India because of the way Devyani was handled and allegedly denied diplomatic immunity.

‘US State deptt aware of reports’

“The Department of State is aware of reports that a US citizen has been arrested in New Delhi, India, and takes its obligation to assist US citizens overseas seriously,” said Peter Velasco, a US State Department spokesperson.

The spokesperson said  because of privacy considerations, they were unable to comment further.

Meanwhile, US Senator Charles Schumer said, “I would hope that India, a country that we have a good relationship with, would not stoop to the petty level of making a political pawn of this decorated NYPD cop and veteran”.

Bir Yorum

  1. Its illegal to carry bullets/guns in India without permission. Its not tit for tat by India as the article says. Now after violation of Indian Arms Act 1959, US expect India to let free their NYPD officer. Not at all, it will paved the way for terrorists to release them citing this example. Carrying fire-arms and related items including bullets are punishable offence under the Indian Arms Act. Let the law take its own course and guilty be punished.
