Turkey Match Fixing Scandal : Parliament to approve reduction in prison terms

Turkey’s parliament is poised to override the veto by President Gül and approve a reduction in prison terms for match-fixing, a move that could lead to lighter sentences for suspects in the ongoing recent match rigging scandal.

Ankara / NationalTurk – Turkey’s ruling and two main opposition parties are poised to re-vote for the new reduced term of a maximum three years in prison onViolation of Sports law later Friday. Parliament first voted for the changes earlier this month, only eight months after it approved sentences of up to 12 years for anyone convicted of match fixing and rigging.

Turkish President Abdullah Gul vetoed it on the grounds that it was giving “the impression of a special arrangement” to save suspects in the recent match-fixing scandal, including high profile names such as Fenerbahce President Aziz Yildirim and Ex Turkish Football Federation Executive Göksel Gümüsdag.

A court says a total of 93 suspects will go on trial on Feb. 14, after the indictment have been approved by High Criminal Court in Turkey. Aziz Yildirim is the leader of the organşzed crime syndicate according to the indictment.
