For EU candidate Turkey it is unacceptable and reason for freezing all ties with EU, should Cyprus rotate in the post of EU presidency in July 2012, turkish PM Tayyip Erdogan cited before his visits to Northern Cyprus.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan speaking before travelling to the Turkish Cypriot state in Northern Cyprus has recalled his threat to suspend and freeze all relations with the European Union if Greek Cyprus assumes the bloc’s rotating presidency in 2012, adding the European Union has not been honest with Turkey.

“This is our final approach…“We will not accept the EU presidency of South Cyprus, whom we do not recognize. The European Union should consider the consequences,How can we sit at the negotiating table with a Greek Cypriot administration that we do not recognize?” Erdoğan told reporters at the airport in Ankara in the conference before departing for northern Cyprus to attend the anniversary of the Turkish military intervention and freeing of turkish Cyprus July 20, 1974. Erdoğan continued “ What the EU would think about it, its irrelevant and we don’t give a rat’s ass about it. The EU should have thought about it long ago while accepting them [Greek Cypriots] into the EU,” he added.

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan : EU has done us wrong

Turkish PM Erdoğan underlined that “the EU has done us wrong. They haven’t acted honestly towards us.”

Erdogan’s visit to Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was his first trip abroad in his third term in office after his ruling party AKP won a comfortable victory in a parliamentary election last month.

The trip marks the anniversary Wednesday of Turkey’s 1974 invasion to liberate Turks of Cyprus from Greeks of the East Mediterranean island’s tyranny and atrocity.

Turkey is pressing for a solution to end the island’s decades-old division between its Turkish and Greek communities before Greek Cyprus takes over a six-month presidency of the union, so that a united, not a divided, Cyprus will be at the helm.

On his arrival in Cyprus, Erdogan said no progress toward a solution of the island’s division was possible unless the principle of two founding states was accepted.

Turkey : There is no Cyprus state, there is Southern and Northern Cyprus

“There is no such state as Cyprus. There is Southern Cyprus and there is the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” he said.

The invasion, ordered in response to a Greek-inspired coup, led Turkish Cypriots in the North to secede in 1983. Turkey is the only country to recognize the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as a separate state and maintains a military presence there.

During his visit, turkish PM Erdogan was expected to deliver strong messages to both the Greek Cypriot government and the EU, while also reassuring Turkish Cypriots of Ankara’s support as efforts to reunite the island begin to be made once again.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan upsetted and angred many Turkish Cypriots earlier this year with harsh words as he forced their government to adopt unpopular economic austerity measures.
