Turkey, with its 235 blue flag beaches, was ranked third in the world following Spain and France.

The “Clean Environment, Green world, Blue Sea” campaign has been operated with the cooperation of the Turkey Environment Education Association (TÜRÇEV) and the NationalTurk newspaper.

The Blue Flag Action is owned and run by the non-government, non-profit organization, the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The campaign is designed to attract environmental awareness and aims to raise good environmental activities among visiting tourists, local populations and beach and marina management and staff. The campaign criteria is also designed to work in coherence with the national, regional and local admins of each country, thereby assuring that the legislation is being followed, or it can be used to set a benchmark higher than what already exists. The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to over 3550 beaches and marinas in 41 countries across Europe, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, New Zealand, Brazil, Canada and the Caribbean.

Turkey has 235 blue flag beaches

The Blue Flag campaign started in Europe in 1987 with the purpose of encouraging beaches to comply with the EU Bathing Water Directive. The campaign criteria has since developed to address a wide range of issues and the number of participating countries and number of beaches and marinas getting the award has increased yearly.

27 criteria for blue flag beaches and some 22 criteria for blue flag marinas exist. The Blue Flag is given to beaches and marinas that meet a specific set of criteria regarding environmental information and education, water quality, safety and services and environmental management. It has become a symbol of quality recognized by tourists and tour operators and can be used for the promotion of the awarded beach or marina.

Honourable position, 3rd in World Rank, fell to Turkey which acquired 235 Blue Flags. Majority of them was awarded to Antalya and Bodrum provinces which captured 228 Blue Flags (207 for beaches, 9 for marinas and 12 for yachts). We visted Antalya then onto beautiful Alanya last month in June 11 and, the beaches were luke warm turkoise blue and very clean and, quality of hotels, food and service and the local hospitality was just magnificent. We’re now planning to visit northern black sea regions of Turkey for next year.
