One person was killed and injured 14 others injured when two blasts took place in two sleeper coaches of a train in Southern India. Police suspects that the blasts were caused by bombs and has launched investigation.

New Delhi, May 1/Nationalturk – Twin blasts in a two sleeper coaches in a train in Southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu on Thursday killed one person and injured 14 others, some of them critical.

Officials said two blasts took place in two sleeper coaches of the train (Bangalore-Guwahati Express) as it was coming to a halt at the railway station in Chennai, capital of Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

“The blasts took place at the junction of the sleeper coaches S4 and S5 while the train was entering the Chennai Central Railway Station,” they said.

They said  a 24-year-old woman was killed and 14 others injured in the explosions. “The injured were rushed to different hospitals”.

Immediately after the blast, police and security men reached the spot and cordoned the area. The forensic experts collected samples to ascertain the nature of the blast.

Sources said police detained a person, who was found inside the train. His questioning is going on.

Authorities suspect that the blasts were caused by bombs.

Special team formed to probe blasts

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa said a special investigation team has been formed to probe the blasts. “The culprits will be put behind bars,” she said and announced relief to the dead and injured.

“There were two separate blasts in the train. The entire police force is involved in the investigation,” said Southern Railways General Manager Rakesh Mishra.

India’s National Investigation Agency, which usually looks into terror attacks, has sent officials to the site of blast to collect and examine evidence

“It is premature to say what kind of device was used is the blast. Damage to the train is not heavy,” Tamil Nadu’s senior police officer K Ramanujam said.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh condemned the attacks, saying “such barbaric acts targeting innocent men, women and children only highlight the desperation and cowardice of those responsible.”

India has one of the world’s largest railway networks in the world.
