UN to Review Enforcement of Sanctions on Libya

The UN Security Council will review the sanctions it imposed on Libya on February 26, as the air raids on Libya led by NATO for the last 10 days continued.

On Sunday, NATO decided to take over the command of the military operations against Libya, previously led by the United States, and appointed Canadian General Charles Bouchard to lead its forces.

According to Prensa Latina, NATO is charged with enforcing the arms embargo and no-fly zone imposed by the UN Security Council.

The Sanctions Committee against Libya is chaired by Portugal and met for the first time last Friday, according to reports from the UN headquarters in New York.

UN Security Council Resolution 1970, passed unanimously by the 15 members of the Council, prohibits providing, selling or transferring any kind of arms, munitions, equipments, spare parts, technical or financial and technical assistance and military training to Libya.

Resolution 1970 establishes that 17 Gaddafi loyalists, including himself and his immediate family members, some close friends and government officials, are subject to an international travel ban.
