NEW YORK – The UN Security Council called on both Israel and Lebanon on Tuesday to exercise “utmost restraint” as they fired at each other over the border.

The gun battle between Israeli and Lebanese forces was the worst escalation of violence in the region since 2006.

Russian UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin, who took over the council’s presidency in August, said the council debated the flare-up in violence and decided to urge for calm.

“Members of the Security Council call for utmost restraint and call on both sides to abide by UN Resolution 1701,” Churkin said. The resolution ended the brief Israeli-Hezbollah war in the summer of 2006.

Churkin said the council called on Israel and Lebanon to adopt measures to prevent further escalation of the fighting and to cooperate with the UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The UN mission was investigating the incident.

The violence which started on Tuesday at the border of Israeli and Lebanese border resulted in the death of senior Israeli officer, two Lebanese soldiers and an Arab journalist. Two Israeli soldiers were also injured.

The violence allegedly started after Israeli soldiers tried to cut down a tree which they say was to improve their sight lines into Lebanon, a practice which has been done in the past.

However, both sides argue that the tree was in their borders.

The latest violence has been the worst in the region since 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.

It is feared that the violence may continue after Israel announced that it was uprooting more trees on Wednesday.
