UN Security Council Receives Head of Observers’ Mission to Syria

Gen. Robert Mood, head of the UN observers” mission to Syria, will appear for the first time in person at the Security Council on Tuesday, to inform about the crisis in the Arab country.

The Norwegian general will speak at that 15-member body during a closed session scheduled for 15:00 local hour (20:00 GMT).

The military announced in Damascus three days ago his decision to suspend temporarily the groups’ activities due to the high level of violence unleashed in the country.

In that time, Mood called all groups to respect and protect the life of civilians.

It is imperative that all parties offer an opportunity to the plan presented by UN and Arab League special envoy Kofi Annan, and the international community plays its role to materialize the Syrian people’s hopes, the military said on Saturday.

The observers’ mission was created in April by the Security Council. It comprises 300 unarmed soldiers and 100 civilians. The objective is to monitor the implementation of the plan presented by Annan and the Syrian government a month ago.

That plan includes to stop violence in Syria, to release prisoners arbitrarily, let humanitarian aid and journalists enter the country, and begin a peaceful dialogue to solve the crisis.

The Syrian issue also focus on discussions by the presidents attending the Summit of the Group of 20 (G-20), started Monday in Los Cabos, Mexico, among them Vladimir Putin (Russia) and Barack Obama (USA).
