United States is running out of patience with Pakistan

US losing patience with Pakistan on militancy, confirm Leon Edward Panetta – United States Secretary of Defense. It was one of the strongest language used by a United States official to describe the strained ties between Washington and Pakistan.

Washington has for many years urged Islamabad (Pakistan) to deal with the militants based in its tribal regions. Pakistani officials have previously pointed to army operations against militant organisations in tribal areas, adding that many hundreds of Pakistani civilians and troops have died at the hands of such groups. After talks with Afghanistan’s defence minister the US Secretary Panetta added : ” We are reaching the limits of our patience here.”

United States and Afghan officials blame the Haqqani network for some of the deadliest attacks of the 10-year war, including a brazen 18-hour assault on Kabul in April this year. The United States has long pushed Pakistan to do more to help in the war against militancy, but the relationship has received only a series of blows, not least by a unilateral US raid into Pakistan to kill the terrorist Osama bin Laden last year.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta also called for Pakistan to go after the Haqqani militant network, one of the United States most feared enemies in Afghanistan. He said Washington would exert diplomatic pressure and take any other action needed to save its forces.

The comments came as Washington appears to be looking to other allies in the region for help in the face of Pakistan’s foot-dragging. Panetta arrived in Kabul after a visit to India, Pakistan’s old enemy, where he urged New Delhi to take a more active role in Afghanistan.

Independent analysts have suggested that Pakistan’s cooperation is decisive as NATO tries to steady Afghanistan before most foreign combat troops leave the country at the end of 2014. They told also that Pakistan is not able of defeating the Haqqanis, a well organised and disciplined force that can command thousands of fighters.
