Indian police and paramilitary soldiers fired on people at Islamabad, some 65 kms South of Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir on Tuesday while they were protesting against the killing of innocent civilians by soldiers in Kashmir. A youth Imtiyaz Ahmad sustained critical injuries in the soldiers firing. He was rushed to hospital, where he expired later.

The killing sparked more protests in South Kashmir’s Islamabad township. Hundreds of people took to roads amidst chanting of pro-freedom, pro-Islamic and anti-India slogans. The slogans like, “We Want freedom,” “Go India Go” and “Blood for Blood” rented the air. The processionists tried to take out a protest march. However, they were intercepted by a contingent of police and paramilitary soldiers armed with riot gears. The soldiers lobbed dozens of tear smoke shells and fired towards the procession, causing on spot death of a youth Ishtiyaq Ahmad Khanday.

Sensing trouble authorities imposed curfew in the South Kashmir township and deployed hundreds of police and paramilitary soldiers to thwart any protests by people.

The locals said three more youth sustained bullet injuries in firing by police and paramilitary soldiers at K P Road, Islamabad in South Kashmir. They alleged that the soldiers barged into some residential houses and brought three youth namely Arshid, Rafiq and Muslim out of their homes and fired on them on the road. “The trio sustained multiple bullet injuries and were evacuated to Srinagar hospitals for specialized treatment. The condition of Muslim was stated to be critical,” the locals said.

With the death of the two more youth in soldiers firing on Tuesday, the death toll has risen to seven in 5 days. On Friday Indian paramilitary soldiers killed two youth, who were part of a procession in Sopore, some 55 kms North of Srinagar and were demanding bodies of two Lashkar-e-Toiba militants killed in a gunfight with soldiers earlier in the day.

On Saturday Indian paramilitary soldiers again fired on protestors, killing a 22-year old footballer.
On Sunday, Indian paramilitary soldiers fired on protests at Sopore and Baramulla in North Kashmir, killing two more youth.

The paramilitary soldiers have also killed three youth in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian Kashmir since June 12.

The pro-India Kashmir government has already conceded that paramilitary soldiers have gone out of control in Kashmir and had sought the help of Indian government to “rein in” the soldiers.

The pro-Indian and separatist parties and leaders have called on the chief minister of the region to step down for his failure to protect the lives and property of the people.
