Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez confirmed that he will run for reelection for presidency in 2012 to maintain the process of changes in Venezuela that began in 1999 with his first spell at office.

In response to speculations from several sectors about his capacity to lead the government due to health problems, Chavez stated “I have medical, scientific, human, sentimental, political reasons to maintain and continue leading the government, and will run my presidential responsibilities with more strength than before.”

Hugo Chavez stressed that he has never thought of leaving his post of presidency and added that if there were reasons, mainly physical or mental, he would had been the first to do so in a responsible way.

In an interview with the newspaper Correo del Orinoco, Chavez mentioned he felt great in spirits, in mood, in his soul, and his body is responding extraordinarily well in all senses, after undergoing cancer surgery a month ago to have a malignant tumor removed.

Chavez informed on his battle and treatment, that he had completed the first stage of chemotherapy last week in Cuba, but he would have to face new cycles of the treatment to prevent any possible reproduction of malignant cells.

Despite the strict diet and constante checkups, he indicated, he will be working and assuming his responsibilities around the clock.

“I have to take care of my body to continue to live and fight, and to do my bit for a period of time that will not be short, but appropriate to the demands from a process. I am determined to reach 2031,” he added.
