According to an Indian official spokesman, the visa on arrivals in India registered a growth of 24.4 per cent in January 2013.

New Delhi, Feb 12/Nationalturk – In what may be a good news for tourism industry in India, the visa on arrivals in India registered a growth of 24.4 per cent in January this year.

A government spokesman said Visa on Arrival (VoA) in India registered a growth of 24.4 % in January 2013 as compared to January 2012. “A total number of 1,690 VoAs were issued last month as compared to 1,359 VoAs issued in January 2012”.

“VoAs in India were issued to nationals of eleven countries in January 2013.  529 Japanese were given visa on arrival, followed by 367 for citizens of New Zealand, 209 for citizens of Philippines, 186 from Singapore, 181 for citizens of Indonesia, 167 for citizens of Finland, 17 for citizens of Cambodia, 16 for citizens of Vietnam, 11 for citizens of Luxembourg, 6 for citizens of Myanmar and one for national of Laos,” he said.

The spokesman said during January 2013, the highest number of VoAs were issued at India’s Delhi airport (901) followed by Mumbai airport (427), Chennai airport (267) and Kolkata airport (95).

He said as a facilitative measure to attract more foreign tourists to India, Indian government launched “Visa on Arrival” (VoA) scheme in January 2010 for citizens of five countries — Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore, visiting India for tourism purposes. “Later, the Indian government extended VoA scheme to citizens of six more countries, namely Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar in January 2011”.
