At least 67 killed, hundreds injured in traffic accidents over Eid al-Adha (Muslim Festival for Sacrificies) in Turkey.

Istanbul / NationalTurk – At least 67 people killed and 288 were injured in traffic accidents during the four-day-long Eid al-Adha holiday (muslim feast of sacrifice) as of Wednesday afternoon, but the most intense traffic on intercity roads was expected to be on Thursday, the last day of the holiday.

Although the official death toll is not yet known, the numbers, despite their plenitude, show a decrease from the number of fatalities in traffic accidents in previous years during holidays in Turkey. More than 100 were killed and 800 others were injured during last year’s nine-day Eid al-Adha holiday. A total of 162 people died and 907 were injured in traffic accidents that took place across Turkey during this year’s Eid al-Fitr (feast following Ramadan) holiday in September, which was also a nine-day holiday.

Many people used the four-day holiday to visit relatives or holiday resorts in Turkey, the reason why many lives were cut short. Eight deaths were reported on the first day, while 39 were injured. On Sunday, the second day of the holiday, 15 died while another 65 were injured. On the third day 16 people died, while 68 were injured. On the last day, as of 1 p.m., 14 people were reported to have died in various accidents.

Officials said they expected more congested intercity traffic on Thursday and called on drivers to not sit behind the wheel if they are sleep deprived or tired and to obey traffic rules and avoid speeding.

2 brothers, 2 cousins and a friend perished in a tragic accident

Some of the reports concerned entire families killed in tragic car crashes. In one of the most tragic accidents, five young people were killed when a driver going from Samsun to Sinop lost control of the truck that he was driving, ramming into five teenagers after he crashed into another automobile near a roundabout in the town of Vezirköprü on Tuesday night. The truck driver, Ali Tarkan, was slightly injured in the accident. His car could only stop after hitting two other vehicles parked by the roadside. He was detained after the accident, which resulted in the death of Yusuf Aydın (16), Tarık Özışık (14), his brother Metin Özışık (16), their cousin Onur Özışık (13) and another cousin, Fatih Oğuz Bolat (12) who all died at the scene of the crash. The children were buried on Wednesday, with Çetin Özışık, the father of Faruk and Metin, and Yılmaz Özışık, Onur’s father, unable to hold back tears during a very painful funeral. The four children’s deaths shattered the Özışık family, while their friend Yusuf Aydın was also buried in a separate funeral.

Meanwhile, Turkish officials have announced plans to introduce EU standards to drivers’ education in Turkey. A new director has been drafted for this purpose, which includes advanced driving techniques that will replace courses on motor equipment, which are currently part of the drivers’ education curriculum in Turkey. Driving instructors appointed by the National Education Ministry will conduct driving tests. The current written examinations will also be replaced by electronic tests. The relevant ministries are working on the draft, which will be completed and sent to the prime ministry in December, officials have informed.
